Pochettino evaluates Ugochukwu, Chelsea's new signing

Posted : 02 August 2023
Manager Mauricio Pochettino has officially confirmed that Lesley Ugochukwu, Chelsea's latest acquisition, has joined his new teammates in training during the Tuesday evening session in Chicago.

The Blues made a notable announcement yesterday about signing the promising young talent, a France underage international with Nigerian heritage, on a substantial seven-year contract, along with a club option for the 2030-2031 season.

Pochettino is now closely monitoring Ugochukwu's performance before reaching a decision on whether to fully integrate him into the first-team setup on a permanent basis or to arrange a loan deal to further enhance his development.

While Ugochukwu's potential, as demonstrated by his nomination for the 2023 Golden Boy award, is unquestionable, he currently lacks extensive experience, having participated in only 60 professional matches during his time at Rennes, with 25 of those appearances being from the starting lineup.

One potential scenario for the 19-year-old is a season-long loan move to Strasbourg, a club closely affiliated with Chelsea.

Speaking about the capture of Ugochukwu, Pochettino expressed his thoughts to Chelsea's official website, stating, "Today marks his first training session with us. He is an exceptionally talented young player. Although we're unsure if he will have the chance to play tomorrow, we will closely assess his progress. We will evaluate him until the end of the transfer window to decide whether he will stay with us or head out on loan."

As for the team's upcoming schedule, Chelsea's next friendly match is scheduled against German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund on Thursday morning. This encounter could be an opportunity for fans to catch a glimpse of Ugochukwu's potential if he is selected to take part.
