Plymouth Argyle striker Owen Oseni has expressed a firm desire to play for the Nigerian national team. The 22-year-old forward was born in Waterford and is eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland by birth. However, he also holds Ivorian heritage and Nigerian citizenship through his father, making him a multi-national prospect for three different countries.
Oseni has reportedly made contact with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle regarding a potential call-up for the upcoming 2026 Unity Cup. This invitational tournament is scheduled to feature Nigeria, Jamaica, India, and Zimbabwe at the end of the current season. Because Oseni already possesses a valid Nigerian passport and has not featured for Ireland or Ivory Coast at any level, there are no administrative hurdles preventing his immediate inclusion.
The young striker is currently enjoying a breakout campaign in English football following his move to Plymouth Argyle. He has recorded 15 goal involvements across 32 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/2026 season. His most recent performance saw him net two goals in a 3-0 victory against Barnsley on April 6, 2026, further boosting his reputation as a clinical finisher.
These impressive displays have sparked significant transfer interest from several high-profile European clubs. Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic and Belgian outfit Racing Genk are reportedly monitoring the forward ahead of the summer window. Plymouth Argyle currently sits 7th in the League One standings with 59 points, trailing the playoff positions by just two points.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) appears to be leading the race for his services, potentially avoiding another recruitment loss to the Football Association of Ireland. Previous dual-national talents like Chiedozie Ogbene and Adam Idah ultimately chose to represent the Irish national team. Oseni’s commitment would provide Eric Chelle with a fresh attacking option as the Super Eagles look to rebuild their squad depth.
Coach Eric Chelle is expected to use the Unity Cup as a platform to test new talent before the next round of competitive fixtures. Oseni’s physical style and recent goal-scoring form make him a strong candidate for a debut in the coming months. If he maintains his current trajectory, the Waterford-born striker could become a permanent fixture in the Nigerian attack alongside stars like Victor Osimhen.
