Plateau United has made a decisive move to salvage a difficult 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign, appointing experienced coach Gbenga Ogunbote as Technical Adviser ahead of the second stanza of the season.
The Jos-based club parted ways with Coach Shola Ayegun following a run of underwhelming performances that left the former league champions deep in relegation trouble. The club management formally communicated the decision to Ayegun and his backroom staff.
Confirmation of Ogunbote’s appointment came on Sunday evening from the Chairman of the Plateau State Football Association, Hon. Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, who spoke to journalists at Hotel Mouzha in Fes, Morocco.
Plateau United’s change on the bench is a direct response to a turbulent first half of the season that fell short of expectations. Despite hopes for stability at the campaign’s start, inconsistent displays and costly defeats gradually eroded confidence within the squad and among supporters.
Tensions boiled over during the club’s recent home loss to Abia Warriors, as fans openly voiced their displeasure with placards calling for change, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
After 19 league fixtures, Plateau United sit 19th on the NPFL standings, recording just six wins, one draw, and 12 defeats for a total of 19 points—a position that places the club firmly in relegation danger.
Ogunbote arrives with a reputation for navigating difficult situations, having previously managed high-pressure roles at Sunshine Stars, Rangers International, Remo Stars, and Shooting Stars. Widely regarded for his tactical organisation and ability to rebuild teams, the new Technical Adviser is expected to bring structure and renewed belief to the Peace Boys.
With the second stanza approaching, Plateau United will be relying on Ogunbote’s experience to spark a revival, steady the club’s slide, and guide them to safety as the battle for NPFL survival intensifies.
