Following their 2-1 defeat to modest Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Ikorodu City, Plateau United returned to Jos with misleading narratives regarding the match. The fixture, part of Matchday 13, was held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan Stadium in Lagos on Sunday.
Prior to the game, the Jos-based team circulated baseless claims suggesting that Ikorodu City forced them to share the pitch for a pre-match training session. Plateau United Head Coach Shola Adegun, however, confirmed that both teams trained together voluntarily after Sporting Lagos and Osun United had concluded their NNL game around 6 pm on Saturday.
Ikorodu City had been unable to train on the pitch throughout the week due to other scheduled events and programs, making it practical for both teams to familiarize themselves with the playing surface ahead of the league match. The stadium facilities in Lagos belong to the Lagos State Sports Commission and are not owned by Ikorodu City, with only Onikan Stadium available for use by approximately eight teams from the NNL for training and matches.
During the half-time break, when the game was still goalless, some unauthorized members of the visiting team attempted to access restricted areas within the stadium but were denied by security personnel. The game ended with the hosts claiming a 2-1 victory, moving to the top of the NPFL table with 24 points.
After the weekend loss, Plateau United, whose performance fell below expectations, returned to Jos promoting false narratives against Ikorodu City in a failed attempt to deflect attention from their inability to secure a win on the pitch.
