Plateau United and Mighty Jets began the 2026 NPFL Super 6 invitational preseason tournament with victories on Wednesday. Both teams secured 1-0 wins at the New Jos Stadium as the six-team competition got underway in Plateau State.
Plateau United recorded the first victory of the tournament by edging Rivers United 1-0 in front of their home supporters. Jibril Ibrahim scored the decisive goal before the half-hour mark as the Jos club held on for three points.
Rivers United pushed for an equaliser after falling behind. Plateau United's defence remained organised and prevented the two-time NPFL champions from finding a way through.
The result gives Plateau United an early advantage in a tournament designed to provide competitive preparation ahead of the 2026/27 NPFL season. The club is also using the event to assess its squad and build momentum before the new campaign begins.
Mighty Jets produced a similar result in the second game of the day. The hosts defeated El-Kanemi Warriors 1-0 after a tightly contested first half ended without a goal.
Usman Meyanga broke the deadlock for Mighty Jets in the 56th minute. El-Kanemi responded by increasing the pressure, but the Jos side defended its advantage until the final whistle.
The win provides Mighty Jets with a strong start against one of the clubs preparing for continental competition. The tournament gives the hosts an opportunity to test themselves against established NPFL opposition while benefiting from home support.
The Super 6 brings together Rangers International, Rivers United, Shooting Stars, El-Kanemi Warriors, Plateau United and Mighty Jets. Four of the participating clubs are preparing for CAF competitions, while Plateau United and Mighty Jets received wildcard invitations.
The tournament is being used to improve match fitness, assess new players and sharpen tactical plans before the new NPFL campaign. The competition runs at the New Jos Stadium from August 18 to 23.
The opening results also increase the pressure on Rivers United and El-Kanemi Warriors ahead of their next matches. Rivers United are scheduled to face Rangers International on Thursday, while El-Kanemi Warriors will meet Katsina United.
The 2026/27 NPFL season is scheduled to begin later this month. The Super 6 therefore provides an important final test for the participating clubs as they prepare for the demands of the new campaign.
