Plateau United FC returned to winning ways on Matchday 21 of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), securing a hard-fought 1–0 victory over visiting Wikki Tourists at the New Jos Stadium.
The win was a timely boost for the Peace Boys under newly appointed head coach Gbenga Ogunbote, ending a five-game winless streak that included two draws and two defeats. The result also brought renewed belief to the Jos faithful, even if the performance itself was far from dominant.
After a cagey first half, where Plateau United spent much of the time on the back foot, the decisive moment arrived nine minutes into the second period. Vincent Temitope made no mistake in the 54th minute, converting the hosts’ clearest opportunity and sending the home crowd into jubilant celebration.
Despite the scoreline, Wikki Tourists arguably controlled much of the contest. The Bauchi-based side dominated possession and created several promising chances, particularly in the first half. Abdullahi Usman and Jonathan Mairiga spurned gilt-edged opportunities, with poor finishing proving costly.
Plateau United, however, demonstrated grit and organisation in defence. They absorbed sustained pressure, defended resolutely, and capitalised on their lone real chance—an approach that ultimately secured all three points.
The defeat compounds Wikki Tourists’ struggles, leaving them 17th in the NPFL standings and deepening concerns as the season enters a crucial phase.
Speaking after the match, Wikki Tourists head coach Abdu Maikaba acknowledged his team’s difficult situation but expressed confidence in their ability to regroup and respond positively in upcoming fixtures.
For Plateau United, the victory provides a much-needed platform to build on under Ogunbote, as the Peace Boys aim to steady their campaign and climb away from danger.
