Newly appointed Plateau United Technical Adviser, Gbenga Ogunbote, has unveiled a detailed survival plan aimed at steering the Jos-based club away from relegation danger and restoring stability in the ongoing 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season. Ogunbote, affectionately known as “The Oracle,” shared his vision during an interaction with members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Plateau State Chapter, emphasizing that his appointment is focused entirely on rescuing the Peace Boys from their current predicament.
Currently sitting 19th on the NPFL table, Ogunbote acknowledged that the challenge ahead is demanding but achievable if everyone connected to the club remains focused and committed. “We must aim high. If by any chance we fall, we will fall among the stars. But if we stay focused, finishing strong and escaping relegation will be guaranteed,” he said.
The experienced tactician, who has previously managed Shooting Stars, Lobi Stars, Giwa FC, and Sunshine Stars of Akure, noted that his contract runs until the end of the season, with renewal subject to mutual agreement. Addressing the team’s technical challenges, he stressed that immediate solutions would focus on careful management of existing resources. “We will manage the situation for now, gradually introduce new players in key areas, and study the team properly before making wholesale changes,” Ogunbote explained.
Central to his rebuilding strategy is a strong focus on goalscoring, which he described as the quickest way to relieve pressure on the team. “In every training session, our emphasis has been on goalscoring. Football is simple — you play to score and to protect your goal. Once you score, confidence returns,” he added.
Ogunbote further revealed that all departments — goalkeeping, midfield, and attack — require reshuffling, with competition among players expected to raise overall performance levels. While admitting that signing all the players he desires may be challenging, the coach expressed confidence in blending experienced and new players into a cohesive, competitive unit capable of surviving relegation.
The veteran coach also praised Plateau United Chairman, Alhassan Yakmut, describing him as an experienced sports administrator, and called on all stakeholders to support the team. “Plateau United is a respected brand in the NPFL. Everyone must work together to protect that image and ensure the club remains in the top flight,” Ogunbote concluded.
