Pierre Sage Says Premier League Opportunity Was Too Good to Reject

Posted : 14 October 2026

Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage has revealed that the chance to work in the English Premier League was too attractive to turn down, despite the emotional difficulty of leaving Lens after a remarkable season. The French coach is preparing for a special Europa League encounter against former club Lyon, where his managerial career took a major turn.

Sage, 47, will return to familiar surroundings when Palace travel to Lyon on Thursday. He was appointed Lyon manager in November 2023 despite having no previous experience managing a senior team at the highest level. At the time, the seven-time French champions were struggling at the bottom of Ligue 1 and facing the threat of relegation.

The appointment proved transformative. Sage guided Lyon away from danger, helping the club recover sufficiently to qualify for European competition and reach the French Cup final. However, his successful spell came to an abrupt end when he was dismissed midway through the following campaign.

After unsuccessful discussions over a possible move to Queens Park Rangers, Sage rebuilt his reputation at Lens. His achievements there were even more impressive, as he led the club to its first French Cup triumph and a second-place finish in Ligue 1 behind Paris Saint-Germain.

Those accomplishments attracted interest from abroad, with Crystal Palace eventually appointing him as successor to Oliver Glasner. Although leaving Lens was a difficult decision after such a successful campaign, Sage explained that he also had to consider his own professional ambitions.

He described his final season at Lens as extraordinary and potentially historic, acknowledging that he understood the significance of walking away from a team that had achieved so much. Nevertheless, the opportunity to manage in England was one he could not afford to overlook.

Sage has also made history by becoming the 10th French manager to take charge of a Premier League club. Interestingly, he is the first among them to reach the English top flight without having managed 100 senior matches. He acknowledged the influence of legendary French coaches Arsène Wenger and Gérard Houllier, whose achievements helped shape the reputation of French managers in England.

The Crystal Palace boss is also adjusting to the differences between English and French football. According to Sage, Premier League matches are typically played at a consistently high intensity, with opponents rarely sitting deep and allowing their rivals time and space on the ball.

Palace have recovered from losing their first two matches under Sage and recently defeated Nottingham Forest 3-1. They also opened their Europa League campaign with a convincing 4-0 win over Lech Poznań, giving the manager reasons to believe his team can compete on multiple fronts.

Sage is optimistic that Palace's squad depth will help them balance their domestic commitments with European football. As he prepares to return to Lyon, the Frenchman will be focused on continuing his promising start in England while facing a club that played a defining role in his rise as a manager.
