Perfect WAFU-B Run Boosts Flamingos’ World Cup Confidence

Posted : 27 September 2026

Nigeria’s Flamingos have received a major confidence boost ahead of next month’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup after completing a flawless campaign to win the WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

The Akeem Busari-led side secured the regional title on Sunday with a commanding 4-0 victory over Togo, completing a five-match winning run in the tournament.

The Flamingos scored 17 goals and conceded only two throughout the competition, highlighting their attacking efficiency and defensive organisation as they prepare for the global challenge in Morocco.

Captain Harmony Chidi set the tone in the final by converting two penalties in the first half before Oluebube Umejiaku extended Nigeria’s advantage in the 67th minute. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi completed the scoring in the 90th minute.

Nigeria began their campaign with a 5-0 victory over Niger Republic before defeating arch-rivals Ghana 4-2. The Flamingos then overcame Burkina Faso 2-0 and hosts Côte d’Ivoire 2-0 to reach the final with a perfect record.

Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, praised the team for their impressive performance and expressed confidence that the achievement would provide a strong foundation for their World Cup campaign.

“The Flamingos have done very well, made the nation proud and I have this faith in the players that they are not done yet.

“I have confidence in the team to go to Morocco and achieve great things at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup that is starting next month.

“It is no mean feat to win five matches out of five in a tournament. That is a distinction.

“The NFF is appreciative of the WAFU-B headquarters for organising the tournament as a premium preparatory event for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, and I believe the Flamingos have benefitted immensely ahead of the global competition,” Ikpeme said.

For the Flamingos, the WAFU-B triumph provides a valuable competitive test and positive momentum as they shift their focus to the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

The 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup bronze medallists are expected to return to Nigeria on Tuesday before continuing their preparations for the tournament in Morocco.
