Pep Guardiola has revealed he plans to hold discussions with Manchester City’s leadership regarding his future after the club’s Premier League title hopes officially came to an end. City’s 1-1 draw away to Bournemouth confirmed Arsenal as champions with one match still remaining in the season.
The result left Manchester City four points behind Arsenal, making it impossible for the defending champions to retain the league crown. The outcome also intensified speculation surrounding Guardiola’s position following reports that he could step down after Sunday’s final league match against Aston Villa.
Speaking after the game, Guardiola said any decision regarding his future would first be discussed internally with the club’s chairman and senior executives. The Spaniard stressed that he still has one year remaining on his contract and insisted he would not publicly address the situation before speaking privately with the club hierarchy.
Guardiola also suggested that uncertainty around a manager’s future can affect a team, explaining that players may struggle to fully follow a coach if they know he is preparing to leave. Despite repeated questions about the speculation, he avoided giving a direct answer during his post-match press conference.
Instead, Guardiola praised Arsenal and former assistant Mikel Arteta for winning the Premier League title after a long wait. He also admitted City appeared physically exhausted following their FA Cup final victory over Chelsea just days earlier, a result that secured another domestic cup double for the club.
Since arriving at Manchester City in 2016, Guardiola has overseen one of the most successful periods in English football history. Under his leadership, City have won 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.
Reports have linked former City assistant Enzo Maresca with the role should Guardiola decide to leave. Maresca previously worked under Guardiola before moving into management and has recently been without a club after departing Chelsea earlier this year.
