Pep Guardiola Bids Emotional Farewell as Manchester City Lose to Aston Villa

Posted : 24 May 2026

Pep Guardiola’s remarkable era at Manchester City came to an emotional close on Sunday as the Premier League champions suffered a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium. The match marked the end of Guardiola’s hugely successful 10-year spell in charge of the club.

The 55-year-old confirmed on Friday that he would step down after guiding City to an extraordinary collection of 20 trophies during his decade-long tenure. His achievements transformed the club into one of the most dominant teams in English and European football.

Supporters paid tribute to Guardiola before kick-off with a passionate reception inside the stadium. A giant banner featuring his image carried the message: “Game changer. History maker. City forever.” Fans also displayed Catalan flags, while the newly expanded Pep Guardiola Stand was officially in use for the first time.

During his time at City, Guardiola won six Premier League titles as well as the club’s first UEFA Champions League trophy. His reign also delivered numerous domestic cups and established a style of football admired across the world.

The occasion was also significant for Bernardo Silva and John Stones, who both made their final appearances for Manchester City after years of service. Silva, who captained the side, appeared emotional even before the match began.

With Arsenal already confirmed as league champions following City’s draw against Bournemouth earlier in the week, there was little competitive pressure on the hosts. Aston Villa, meanwhile, arrived in high spirits after lifting the Europa League trophy on Wednesday. Their victory at the Etihad also secured a fourth-place finish ahead of Liverpool.

Guardiola rotated heavily for the match, making nine changes to his starting lineup. Erling Haaland was among the notable absentees and did not feature in the squad. Antoine Semenyo gave City an early advantage with a clever finish from a corner kick.

Despite the game having little at stake, Guardiola remained animated on the touchline throughout the contest. However, Villa turned the game around in the second half through Ollie Watkins, who continued his impressive season with two goals.

Watkins capitalized on a defensive mistake from John Stones to score Villa’s equalizer before adding a second moments later with a composed finish after breaking clear of the City defense. The England forward’s performance further strengthened his case for international selection ahead of the World Cup.

The emotional atmosphere continued during the second half as play paused for Bernardo Silva and later John Stones to receive guard-of-honor tributes from teammates and supporters as they left the pitch.

Manchester City thought they had rescued a late draw when Phil Foden smashed the ball into the net off the underside of the crossbar. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside despite complaints over the lack of clear evidence.
