Guardiola: Manchester City Have “Recovered Many Things” After Trophyless Season

Posted : 24 September 2025

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has declared that his side is beginning to rediscover the qualities that defined their dominance in recent years after enduring a trophyless season in 2024/2025.

Over the past two transfer windows, Guardiola has reshaped his squad, with long-serving stars such as Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, and goalkeeper Ederson departing the Etihad. The Spaniard admitted the changes have forced City into a period of transition but stressed that progress is now visible.

Speaking ahead of City’s League Cup third-round tie against Huddersfield Town on Wednesday, Guardiola reflected on Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal, where his side adopted a defensive setup and conceded a late equaliser.

“I’m really proud of this fight,” he said. “We recovered many, many things that last season we missed. We have an incredible spirit. Of course, we cannot play that way for an entire season, and we don’t want to, but against Arsenal we showed great resilience.”

Guardiola emphasised that earning a point against Mikel Arteta’s side—considered strong title contenders—should not be underestimated. He pointed to City’s recent 3-0 victory over Manchester United as another sign that the team is returning to its hallmark intensity and cohesion.

“Since the United game, we’ve started to recover many of the things that defined us for years,” he explained. “We can improve, yes, and we will. But first comes the spirit we’ve shown this week, and that’s something we must protect carefully.”

Despite sitting ninth in the Premier League table after five matches, eight points adrift of leaders Liverpool, Guardiola remains confident City will build momentum as the season progresses.

The League Cup has been a happy hunting ground for City under Guardiola, with the club lifting the trophy four times since his arrival. The Catalan tactician will be hoping the midweek clash against third-tier Huddersfield provides the platform for another cup run and a boost to his evolving squad.
