Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has declared that the “real season starts now” as his side aims to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal. City narrowed the deficit to four points before the recent international break, following a 3-0 thrashing of champions Liverpool, while Arsenal dropped points in a 2-2 draw at Sunderland.
Speaking ahead of City’s trip to Newcastle on Saturday, Guardiola stressed the importance of maintaining momentum from these results. He acknowledged the challenge posed by an “impeccable” Arsenal but reminded that the season is still in its early stages.
“The feeling I had in the past when we fought incredibly against Liverpool was that if they take a lot of distance, it will be difficult to catch up,” he said, recalling last season when Liverpool secured the title with four games to spare.
The City boss emphasized that nothing is decided in November. “There are two parts of the season: when the transfer window is over in summer, and after the international break. Now the international break is done, so we’ll be together until March, seeing each other every three or four days. Now the real, real season starts,” Guardiola said.
He added that staying close to the top is the goal, so the team can fight for the title at the end of the campaign. A victory over Newcastle would be an important step toward that objective.
For Saturday’s match at St James’ Park, Guardiola will be without midfielders Mateo Kovacic and Rodri. “Everybody is fit except Kova and Rodri. Rodri is making good progress—it’s almost three weeks since his last setback. He knows he has to take time to recover well, mentally and physically, and to be consistent from now until the end,” he said.
If City win, they would move to just one point behind Arsenal, who host London rivals Tottenham the following day. The stage is set for a crucial weekend in the Premier League title race.
