Pep Guardiola has issued a stark warning to Manchester City, stating that he could quit as manager if the club does not reduce the size of his squad this summer. The Spaniard expressed deep frustration with having to leave several players out of matchday squads, calling it "impossible for my soul" to consistently exclude key squad members. Guardiola’s dissatisfaction became apparent after a number of senior players missed out on the 20-man squad for City’s recent 3-1 win over Bournemouth.
Several promising players such as Abdukodir Khusanov, Savinho, James McAtee, Claudio Echeverri, and Rico Lewis were left out of the matchday squad despite the team’s strong position in the Premier League.
While this depth illustrates the talent available at City, Guardiola is keen to manage a smaller group of players moving forward. He insisted that he does not want to “leave five or six players in the freezer” and warned that unless the squad is trimmed, he is prepared to step down.
Guardiola reflected on the difficulties of handling such a large squad, emphasizing how challenging it is to leave players out week after week. He recalled a time when injuries forced him to manage with fewer defenders but made clear that having 24 or more fully fit players is unsustainable.
The manager told the club that he wants a smaller roster to foster better team cohesion and ensure every player feels valued and connected, something he feels was lacking this season.
Manchester City spent over £200 million on new signings in January, adding several young talents to an already crowded squad. While Kevin De Bruyne is confirmed to be leaving this summer, the futures of players like Jack Grealish remain uncertain.
Guardiola stressed that the club must decide on squad size, but reiterated his preference for a leaner group of players, allowing better management and stronger unity within the team. In comparison with other Premier League clubs, City currently have a notably large squad, while teams like Arsenal and Liverpool maintain smaller groups for better balance.
