Derby Football Academy held their nerve when it mattered most, defeating RBM Sports of Kubwa 4–1 on penalties after a goalless stalemate in their Round of 32 clash at the ongoing 2026 FCT President Federation Cup in Abuja.
Played at the Area 3 Football Pitch, the encounter was defined more by caution than creativity, as both sides struggled to carve out meaningful chances across regulation time. Defensive discipline took centre stage, leaving spectators with a tense but low-scoring affair that ultimately had to be decided from the spot.
Despite the evenly balanced contest, Derby FA showed superior composure in the shootout, converting four of their penalties with confidence. In contrast, RBM Sports faltered under pressure, managing to score just once as their hopes of progression slipped away.
For Derby FA, the victory continues an encouraging run in the competition, as the debutants confidently book a place in the Round of 16. Their ability to stay calm in decisive moments proved the difference in a match where margins were minimal.
Reacting after the game, Derby FA Head Coach, Aluko Awolowo, admitted his side had to overcome early disruptions to secure the win.
“It wasn’t an easy match for us. We came in unsettled due to timing issues, and that affected the players mentally,” he said.
He added that the team remains focused on improving ahead of tougher tests.
“We will go back, review our performance, and work on areas that need improvement. Our ambition this time is to go all the way and win the trophy.”
On the other side, RBM Sports Head Coach, Emmanuel David, praised his players’ effort but pointed to missed opportunities as the decisive factor.
“My players gave everything, but we failed to convert our chances. That is where we lost the game,” he noted.
Looking ahead, David expressed optimism despite the setback, emphasizing the team’s focus on upcoming competitions, particularly the Nationwide League One (NLO).
Meanwhile, in one of the standout results of the round, Sporting Supreme FC delivered a ruthless attacking performance, thrashing PXA FC 9–0 to secure their place in the next round in emphatic fashion.
The 2026 FCT President Federation Cup, which kicked off on March 30, features 32 teams in the men’s category and continues to gather momentum as the race for the title intensifies.
The victory marks a significant milestone for Derby FA as they navigate the complexities of high-stakes knockout football. By overcoming RBM Sports, the academy has demonstrated the mental fortitude required to progress in a tournament known for its unpredictable nature.
