Paul Okoku Laments Nigeria Loss After Folarin Balogun Stars for United States at 2026 World Cup

Posted : 17 June 2026

Former Nigeria international Paul Okoku has described striker Folarin Balogun's decision to represent the United States at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup as a significant loss for Nigerian football. The US-based former Flying Eagles midfielder expressed his thoughts after watching Balogun deliver an exceptional performance on his tournament debut.

The 24-year-old Monaco forward was named Player of the Match in the United States' commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening Group D fixture at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Balogun scored two brilliant first-half goals, finding the net in the 31st minute and deep into first-half stoppage time. An early own goal by Damián Bobadilla and a late strike from Gio Reyna sealed the win for Mauricio Pochettino's side, while Maurício grabbed a consolation goal for Paraguay.

Okoku noted that Balogun represents the fluid nature of modern football culture. The striker was born in New York to Nigerian parents and raised in England, making him eligible for three different nations before he pledged his senior allegiance to the United States in 2023. Okoku emphasized that while every player has the right to choose their international destiny, seeing such elite talent shine under another flag is a reality that should force reflection within Nigerian football administration.

The 1983 Flying Eagles star pointed out that Nigeria does not lack raw football talent. Instead, he argued that the country has consistently failed to build the necessary structural planning, trust, and continuity required to keep diaspora-born players committed to the green and white shirt. This structural deficit is particularly visible during this tournament cycle.

With the Super Eagles completely absent from the 2026 tournament, Okoku highlighted that at least 15 players of Nigerian descent are actively representing other nations on the global stage. He concluded that while this widespread impact is a source of pride, Nigerian football authorities must design better internal systems to ensure future dual-nationality talents choose Nigeria.
