Former France international Patrick Vieira has emerged as the leading candidate to become the next head coach of Senegal following the dismissal of Pape Thiaw after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Reports indicate that the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has stepped up its search for a new manager and views Vieira as the frontrunner to take charge of the Teranga Lions ahead of their upcoming international assignments.
Thiaw was relieved of his duties after Senegal's disappointing Round of 32 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The federation is now seeking an experienced coach capable of rebuilding the squad and guiding the team through the qualification campaigns for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Vieira's candidacy has attracted considerable attention because of his connection to Senegal. Born in Dakar before moving to France as a child, he went on to enjoy one of football's most distinguished playing careers, winning the FIFA World Cup in 1998 and the UEFA European Championship in 2000 with France.
After retiring from professional football, Vieira built an extensive coaching career across Europe. He has managed Major League Soccer side New York City FC, French clubs Nice and Strasbourg, Premier League outfit Crystal Palace and Italian side Genoa, gaining experience in several of Europe's top leagues.
His reputation for developing young players, implementing structured tactical systems and managing high-pressure environments is believed to have strengthened his position in the selection process.
Although the Senegalese Football Federation has not officially confirmed its shortlist, reports suggest Vieira currently leads the race ahead of several other candidates under consideration.
If appointed, Vieira would inherit one of Africa's strongest national teams, featuring stars such as Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly, Ismaïla Sarr and Nicolas Jackson. His immediate challenge would be restoring confidence after Senegal's disappointing World Cup campaign while maintaining the team's status among the continent's elite.
The appointment would also mark Vieira's first role as a senior national team coach after managing exclusively at club level throughout his coaching career.
Senegal remain one of Africa's leading football nations despite their World Cup disappointment. The federation is expected to complete its search in the coming weeks as preparations continue for the next international window.
An official announcement from the FSF is still awaited, but Vieira's experience, international pedigree and Senegalese roots have made him a strong contender to lead the Teranga Lions into a new era.
