Patrice Motsepe to Meet Kenyan Officials Over FKF Leadership Crisis and AFCON 2027

Posted : 11 May 2026

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe is scheduled to meet high-ranking Kenyan sports officials this week. The visit comes at a critical time as the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) remains paralyzed by a bitter leadership feud. Motsepe is currently in Nairobi for the Africa Forward Summit. He will address attendees on Monday afternoon regarding the strategic growth of African football.

The primary focus of his visit involves private deliberations with local stakeholders over the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Kenya is set to co-host the continental showpiece alongside Uganda and Tanzania. However, internal wrangles at the FKF have raised concerns about the country's organizational stability. The governing body is currently split into two warring factions.

Last month, FKF President Hussein Mohammed was purportedly ousted by the National Executive Committee (NEC). The meeting that led to his suspension was chaired by his deputy, McDonald Mariga. Opponents accuse Mohammed of involvement in the loss of Ksh 42 million. These funds were allegedly paid as brokerage fees to an unlicensed firm during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) preparations.

Hussein Mohammed has dismissed his removal as illegal and unconstitutional. He argues that only the president has the authority to convene NEC meetings under Article 38 of the FKF constitution. Both the Sports Disputes Tribunal and the High Court have recently granted him a reprieve. These rulings barred the Mariga-led faction from implementing any resolutions from their contested meeting.

Despite the boardroom drama, Mohammed recently assured the National Assembly Committee on Sports that AFCON preparations are on track. He maintained that infrastructure upgrades and stadium renovations are proceeding according to the schedule set by CAF. The government recently expanded the Local Organising Committee (LOC) to include members from both FKF factions to ensure progress remains steady.

Patrice Motsepe’s intervention is seen as a vital step toward restoring order. Football fans in the region hope the CAF chief can broker a peace deal. A resolution is necessary to ensure that political infighting does not derail the biggest sporting event in East African history.
