Pape Gueye Beats Akor Adams to Claim Prestigious La Liga African MVP Award

Senegal international Pape Gueye has officially secured the 2025/26 Sporty La Liga African MVP award. The Villarreal midfield anchor was announced as the winner at a star-studded gala ceremony in Lagos on Sunday, May 24, 2026. The 27-year-old midfielder claimed 38 percent of the total votes to finish comfortably ahead of the competition.

Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams finished in second place with 24 percent of the vote; he missed out on winning the award for a third consecutive year. Villarreal winger Nicolas Pepe secured third position after pulling 22 percent of the ballot. Sevilla duo Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke were also shortlisted but failed to reach the final podium.

Gueye played a central role for the Yellow Submarine this season, steering the Spanish club to a consecutive UEFA Champions League qualification spot. The midfielder capped off his brilliant campaign by scoring in Villarreal's emphatic 5-1 final-day victory over Atletico Madrid. He recorded five goals and two assists across 30 league appearances during his outstanding breakout season.

Despite missing out on the prize, Nigerian forward Akor Adams enjoyed a productive campaign with Sevilla FC. The 25-year-old striker finished the year as Nigeria's highest-scoring player across Europe's top five leagues; he netted 10 league goals and provided three assists in 32 matches. His vital goals against Atletico Madrid, Espanyol, and Villarreal helped the Andalusian club avoid relegation.

The glamorous event in Lagos attracted massive football royalty, including former Barcelona midfielder Alex Song and ex-Cameroon defender Geremi Njitap. Speaking after receiving the award, an emotional Gueye described the honour as a real source of pride and the first individual trophy of his professional career. He emphasized that he is currently experiencing the best moments of his career with Villarreal while proudly representing Senegal.
