PAMOJA 2027: Super Eagles get easy draw against Madagascar, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau

Posted : 20 May 2026

Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles, have been handed what many observers consider a favourable draw for the qualification series of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, tagged PAMOJA 2027.

The three-time African champions were drawn in Group L alongside Tanzania, Madagascar, and Guinea-Bissau during the official draw ceremony held on Tuesday at the Egyptian Football Association headquarters in Cairo.

The qualification campaign will determine the 24 teams that will feature at the continental showpiece scheduled to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from June 19 to July 17 next year.

For Nigeria, the draw presents another opportunity to renew rivalries with familiar opponents. The Super Eagles previously faced Madagascar during the qualifiers for the 2012 AFCON, winning both home and away encounters.

Nigeria also battled Guinea-Bissau during the race to the 2023 AFCON finals in Côte d’Ivoire. While the Djurtus stunned the Eagles in Abuja, Nigeria responded with victory in the reverse fixture in Bissau.

Tanzania are equally no strangers to the Super Eagles, having shared the same qualifying group with Nigeria on the road to the 2017 tournament. After a goalless draw in Dar es Salaam, Nigeria secured a narrow 1-0 victory in Uyo courtesy of a long-range strike from Kelechi Iheanacho.

Elsewhere, hosts Morocco were drawn against Gabon, Niger Republic, and Lesotho in Group A, while seven-time African champions Egypt will face Angola, Malawi, and South Sudan in Group B.

One of the toughest pools appears to be Group C where reigning African champions Côte d’Ivoire will battle Ghana, The Gambia, and Somalia.

Five-time champions Cameroon must navigate past Comoros, Namibia, and Congo in Group G, while Senegal headline Group J alongside Mozambique, Sudan, and Ethiopia.

The top two teams from each of the 12 groups will qualify for the tournament finals.

With the qualification matches scheduled to take place across international windows between September 2026 and March 2027, the Super Eagles will look to assert their dominance early in Group L. Having faced these opponents in previous tournaments and qualifiers, Nigeria possess the tactical experience needed to navigate the group successfully. A disciplined approach will be crucial for the three-time African champions to secure their spot at the continental showpiece in East Africa.
