Oyo State’s Pacesetter Queens are set to make their long-awaited debut in the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) for the 2025/26 season, marking a major milestone in the state’s football development and gender inclusion in sports.
The club, officially recognized as the women’s team of NPFL side Shooting Stars, will feature in Nigeria’s top-tier women’s league after acquiring the topflight slot of Benue Queens.
The development underscores Oyo State’s growing commitment to advancing women’s football and bridging the gender gap in sports participation.
Announcing the milestone, Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Alhaja Wasilat Adefemi Adegoke, described the promotion as “a new dawn for women’s football in Oyo State,” expressing confidence that the team will uphold and expand the state’s proud sporting tradition.
“This achievement represents the resilience and vision of Oyo State in ensuring that women have equal opportunities to participate and excel in football,” she said.
Pacesetter Queens’ inclusion also reinforces the South-West’s dominance in the women’s game, with seven teams now representing the region — including Robo Queens, Dannaz Ladies, Remo Stars Ladies, Castmog Ladies, Sunshine Queens, and Osun Babes.
The NWFL board is expected to confirm the official kickoff date and fixtures for the 2025/26 season during its Annual General Assembly in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, October 29.
The debut of Pacesetter Queens symbolizes not only progress for Oyo State but also a boost for women’s football development across Nigeria.
