The Oyo State Executive Council has approved ₦110 million for the camping and hosting of Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national football team, the Falconets, ahead of their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying fixture against Rwanda.
The financial approval, one of the key resolutions of the Council meeting, is aimed at ensuring smooth logistics and adequate preparations for the return leg of the second-round qualifier, which will be held at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan on Saturday, September 27. The first leg of the fixture is scheduled for Sunday, September 21, in Kigali, Rwanda.
As part of early preparations, Falconets head coach Moses Aduku had invited 35 players to camp in August, beginning the team’s journey toward securing a place at the global tournament.
The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will take place in Poland, following the 2024 edition in Colombia, which featured 24 teams for the first time. In that tournament, the Falconets opened with a 1-0 win over South Korea, suffered a 1-3 loss to Germany, and bounced back with a 4-0 victory over Venezuela before narrowly exiting in the Round of 16 with a 1-2 defeat to Japan.
The Oyo State Government’s financial backing underscores the state’s commitment to sports development and supporting national representation on the global stage.
