Oyarzabal Seals Spain Comeback Win Over England as Modric Inspires Croatia

Mikel Oyarzabal scored the decisive goal as world champions Spain came from behind to beat England 3-2 at Wembley in the Nations League.

Spain extended their unbeaten run to 39 matches after overcoming England 3-2 in a thrilling Nations League opener at Wembley on Saturday. Mikel Oyarzabal, who also scored the winner against England in the Euro 2024 final, struck in the 74th minute to complete Spain’s comeback.

Lamine Yamal put Spain ahead inside two minutes after Marc Guehi’s misplaced pass allowed the Barcelona forward to seize possession and fire into the corner. England responded strongly, with Anthony Gordon equalising in the 36th minute before Harry Kane headed the hosts in front four minutes later.

England had an opportunity to extend their lead early in the second half when they were awarded a penalty following a VAR review. However, Kane slipped while taking the spot-kick and his effort struck the crossbar.

Spain took advantage of England’s missed opportunity when Nico O’Reilly’s misplaced pass presented possession to the visitors. Dani Olmo set up Alex Baena, who finished brilliantly to level the score in the 60th minute.

Oyarzabal then completed the turnaround 14 minutes later, combining with Baena before lifting a composed finish over James Trafford. The victory kept Spain’s unbeaten streak at 39 matches and gave them a winning start to their Nations League campaign.

In the other League A, Group 3 match, Croatia defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in Prague. Luka Modrić opened the scoring shortly after half-time before Adam Karabec equalised seven minutes later. Marco Pašalić eventually headed in the winner for Croatia.

Elsewhere in League B, Switzerland began their campaign with a 3-0 victory over North Macedonia, with Remo Freuler and Zeki Amdouni scoring. Slovenia and Scotland played out a goalless draw.

In League C, Finland thrashed San Marino 7-0, with Joel Pohjanpalo scoring a hat-trick. Albania beat Belarus 2-0, Slovakia defeated Moldova by the same score, while Luxembourg recorded a 2-1 away win over Bulgaria.
