More than 70 teams have confirmed participation in the 2026 Lagos State Challenge Cup, popularly known as the Lagos FA Cup, as preparations intensify for the competition scheduled to begin later this month.
The grassroots football tournament, regarded as one of the most competitive state competitions in Nigeria, will run from March 22 to April 26 across designated centres in Lagos State.
A total of 67 teams will compete in the men’s category, while eight sides are set to battle for honours in the women’s event.
The winners of the state competition will go on to represent Lagos at the national stage of the President Federation Cup, where they will face champions from other states across the country.
According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Director of Competitions, Ruth David, the state preliminaries of the country’s oldest football tournament will hold between March 22 and April 26.
She disclosed that any club that fails to honour its match after completing registration at the state level will face a fine of ₦500,000.
David also stated that teams that fail to appear for matches during the national preliminaries of the President Federation Cup will be sanctioned with a ₦1 million fine.
The statement further indicated that all states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) must conclude their finals on Saturday, April 25 or Sunday, April 26, after which each Football Association will submit its two representatives for the national competition.
Meanwhile, the draw ceremony for the Lagos FA Cup is expected to take place next week, with club owners and football stakeholders awaiting confirmation of the date, venue, and time for the event.
