Ousmane Dembele's return to face Barcelona adds spice to Champions League clash

Posted : 09 April 2024

In the upcoming Champions League quarterfinal clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, much of the spotlight will naturally fall upon Kylian Mbappe. However, Ousmane Dembele, the former Barca player, is poised to play a significant role for the French side against his former club. Despite Mbappe's impressive tally of 39 goals for PSG this season compared to Dembele's solitary goal, the latter brings a distinctive skill set to the field, recognized even by Barcelona, who are well aware of his capabilities as a winger.

Having returned to France last August after six seasons in Catalonia, Dembele's move to PSG marked a significant chapter in his career, with the French club securing his services for a reported 50 million euros. This relatively modest fee, considering the current transfer market standards for a player of his caliber, mirrored the release clause at financially strained Barcelona. His decision to join PSG also allowed him to reunite with Luis Enrique, who had previously expressed interest in signing him during his breakthrough at Rennes.

Reflecting on his departure from Barcelona, Dembele acknowledged the difficulty of leaving behind a club where he experienced significant growth under the management of Xavi Hernandez. Despite the success, his desire to join PSG stemmed from the allure of Paris and a shift in priorities rather than merely quitting Barcelona. Thus, fate has orchestrated a reunion as he faces Barcelona once again in the Champions League quarterfinals, akin to his coach Luis Enrique.

The history between PSG and Barcelona adds further intrigue to Dembele's upcoming encounter with his former club. In previous meetings, particularly the infamous last-16 tie in 2017, emotions ran high as Barcelona overturned a substantial deficit to secure victory. PSG retaliated by signing Neymar Junior in a record-breaking deal, reshaping the dynamics between the two clubs. As Dembele prepares to take the field against his former teammates, the stage is set for another captivating chapter in the ongoing saga between PSG and Barcelona.
