Otto Addo Takes Ghana FA to FIFA, Demands Over $750,000 Compensation

Posted : 03 November 2026

Former Ghana head coach Otto Addo has taken the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to FIFA over the termination of his contract, demanding more than $750,000 in compensation.

The former Black Stars manager reportedly filed a formal complaint on Saturday, October 31, 2026, after several unsuccessful attempts to reach a financial settlement with the GFA. According to JoySports, Addo is challenging the termination of his agreement and seeking payment for outstanding contractual obligations.

Addo reportedly earned $50,000 monthly after signing a 34-month contract with the GFA in March 2024. The agreement was expected to run until early 2027, but the association terminated his appointment on March 31, 2026.

Reports indicate that the former Borussia Dortmund coach had approximately 10 months remaining on his contract when he was dismissed. This would represent around $500,000 in basic salary, although the total compensation being sought reportedly exceeds $750,000.

The precise breakdown of his claim, including any outstanding bonuses and additional contractual entitlements, has not been independently established. Neither FIFA nor the GFA has publicly confirmed the details of the reported complaint.

The dispute follows Addo's dismissal after Ghana suffered consecutive defeats during the March 2026 international window.

The Black Stars endured a heavy 5-1 loss to Austria in Vienna before falling 2-1 to Germany in Stuttgart. The results extended Ghana's losing streak to four matches and increased pressure on the coaching staff.

The GFA subsequently announced Addo's immediate departure on March 31, bringing his second spell in charge of the national team to an end. His dismissal came just 72 days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Addo returned to the Black Stars in March 2024 after previously managing the team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. His reappointment followed the departure of Chris Hughton, who was dismissed after Ghana's disappointing group-stage elimination at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

During his second tenure, Addo successfully guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, his failure to secure a place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco became a major setback for his administration.

The reported FIFA complaint now introduces another challenge for the GFA, which must address the financial implications of the former coach's departure.

If the dispute proceeds through FIFA's relevant football dispute resolution process, the governing body could examine the contractual terms, circumstances surrounding the dismissal and financial obligations owed to Addo.

The GFA has yet to publicly respond to the former coach's reported compensation demand.
