Otega Ekperuoh faces competition as Chelsea loans Bergstrom to IF Brommapojkarna

Posted : 29 February 2024

Emerging dual-national talent Otega Ekperuoh finds himself facing a fresh challenge in the goalkeeping department at IF Brommapojkarna as the new Allsvenskan season approaches.

Chelsea officially announced on Thursday that Finland international Lucas Bergström has extended his contract at Stamford Bridge until 2025 and concurrently been loaned out to the Swedish top-flight club IF Brommapojkarna until January 1, 2025.

The arrival of Bergström on loan may potentially impact the position of Swedish-Nigerian goalkeeper Ekperuoh in the pecking order at IF Brommapojkarna.

In the previous season, Ekperuoh served as the third-choice goalkeeper, trailing Filip Sidklev and Lucas Hägg Johansson. Despite being called up for six first-team games, he remained a non-playing substitute on each occasion.

Having inked a first-team contract with IF Brommapojkarna in July 2022, Ekperuoh embarked on a loan spell to Division 2 club Enskede IK for the remainder of the season, gaining valuable experience in senior football.

Joining IF Brommapojkarna in 2016, Ekperuoh ascended through the ranks of the youth teams before earning a spot in the first team. He has earned national team call-ups for players eligible for Sweden born in 2004.

Chelsea secured the services of Lucas Bergström from Turun Palloseura during the 2018-2019 season, and he has been included in the matchday squad for first-team games on 25 occasions.
