Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has handed Tromsø defender Vince Osuji a maiden invitation to the Super Eagles as preparations continue for the international friendly against Russia in Moscow on October 6.
The 20-year-old defender was brought into the squad following the withdrawal of captain Wilfred Ndidi, Sani Suleiman, Mubarak Suleiman and FC Basel defender Akpe Victory from the fixture.
Chelle had initially named 24 players for the encounter, but the latest withdrawals have forced the coach to make adjustments as the Eagles prepare for their first meeting with Russia.
Osuji’s invitation provides the youngster with an opportunity to train alongside the senior national team and impress the technical crew ahead of future international engagements.
The defender moved to Tromsø after spending two years with Belgian club Club Brugge, having previously featured for Swedish side Kalmar.
He was unable to establish himself in Club Brugge’s senior team before subsequently making the move to Norway.
Chelle is understood to be monitoring Osuji as part of his plans to assess emerging defensive options, with the coach also expected to continue evaluating younger players within the national-team setup.
The invitation comes as Nigeria seek to respond to their 3–0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Russia friendly therefore presents Chelle with an opportunity to assess his available players, experiment with combinations and expose emerging talents to international football.
For Osuji, the Moscow fixture could mark the beginning of his involvement with the senior national team as he looks to make an impression on the technical crew.
