Osimhen Scores but Clashes With Villarreal Defender in Galatasaray Defeat

Posted : 10 August 2026

Victor Osimhen was on target for Galatasaray but found himself at the centre of controversy during their 2-1 pre-season defeat to Villarreal at Rams Park on Saturday. The Nigerian striker equalised early after Ayoze Pérez had given the Spanish side the lead from the penalty spot.

Villarreal struck in the third minute to take an early advantage. Osimhen responded just two minutes later after capitalising on a defensive mistake to restore parity in a lively opening to the friendly.

The match then produced a heated moment involving Osimhen and Villarreal defender Santiago Mouriño. Reports from Turkey said the two players exchanged words during a Galatasaray attack in the 37th minute before the Nigerian approached the defender and pushed him.

Mouriño went to the ground following the contact. The confrontation continued after the Villarreal defender returned to his feet, with the two players eventually coming face-to-face before the situation was brought under control.

The incident added tension to a match that was already highly competitive despite its pre-season status. Villarreal regained the lead four minutes later when Georges Mikautadze finished an attacking move to make it 2-1 before the interval.

Galatasaray could not find another equaliser after the break. Villarreal maintained their advantage and completed the win, giving the Spanish side an encouraging result before the start of the new La Liga campaign.

For Osimhen, the goal provided another positive moment during Galatasaray's preparations for the new season. The Super Eagles forward remains one of the club's main attacking weapons after playing a key role in their 2025/26 domestic campaign.

Osimhen helped Galatasaray win a fourth consecutive Süper Lig title last season. He also scored the decisive goal in the club's 4-2 victory over Antalyaspor in May, a result that secured the championship before the final league fixture.

The Villarreal friendly came after Galatasaray had already suffered pre-season defeats against Monza and Venezia. Their schedule shows the Turkish champions will begin their new Süper Lig campaign against Çorum FK on August 14.

Osimhen's goal will therefore offer encouragement to Galatasaray despite another pre-season setback. The confrontation with Mouriño, however, ensured the Nigerian's latest appearance was remembered for more than his finishing.
