Victor Osimhen heads into tonight's high-stakes UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg at Anfield carrying more than just attacking responsibility. The Super Eagles striker is one yellow card away from a one-match suspension: a booking tonight would trigger an automatic ban under UEFA disciplinary rules, potentially sidelining him for a quarter-final first leg against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Under UEFA regulations, a third yellow card at this stage of the competition automatically triggers a one-match ban. For Galatasaray, the stakes are especially sharp. Osimhen is joined on the disciplinary tightrope by Abdülkerim Bardakcı, İsmail Jakobs, Noa Lang, and Roland Sallai. Defender Davinson Sánchez will miss tonight's match entirely, suspended after picking up a yellow card in the first leg.
Osimhen is Galatasaray's top scorer this season with 19 goals in all competitions, including seven in the Champions League. His influence in the first leg was evident even without a goal. Galatasaray secured a 1-0 victory at Rams Park, with Mario Lemina heading home after just seven minutes following Osimhen's assist from a corner.
Osimhen also found the net in the 61st minute, but the effort was ruled out by VAR after Baris Alper Yilmaz was deemed offside in the build-up.
Coach Okan Buruk has been vocal about the pressure the yellow card rules place on his squad. Speaking ahead of the first leg, Buruk said: "Seven of our players are on the verge of suspension.
The most difficult part for us is that four of our most frequently playing players in the same position in defence, our goalkeeper and two attackers are on the verge. While playing this match in the best way possible, we will also do our best to avoid getting cards unnecessarily."
Liverpool, facing elimination, will be desperate to overturn the deficit in front of their home crowd. Arne Slot is "100% sure" his team "can do better" in the reverse fixture and expects the Anfield faithful to replicate the hostile atmosphere Galatasaray fans created in Istanbul.
Within that mission lies a tactical subplot: neutralising Osimhen while potentially drawing the booking that rules him out of a possible quarter-final.
Galatasaray have prevailed in 14 of their last 17 two-legged UEFA ties after winning the first leg at home. However, they have won just one of their last 12 away trips in England.
Should Galatasaray advance, the reward would be a quarter-final tie against PSG: and whether Osimhen is available for that clash may well depend on how he manages himself over 90 minutes tonight.
