Osimhen Faces Weeks on the Sidelines After Suffering Right Forearm Fracture Against Liverpool

Posted : 19 March 2026

Galatasaray confirmed that Osimhen took a blow to his arm during the first half, completed the opening 45 minutes, but was ruled out of the second period following halftime checks. Hospital examinations after the match revealed a fracture in his right forearm; a cast was applied, and a decision on surgery will be made after further evaluation in the coming days.

Turkish orthopaedic surgeon Dr Mustafa Şenyurt noted that the ulna bone sits just beneath the skin and is particularly vulnerable to direct trauma. His assessment was that the level of pain Osimhen experienced and his inability to continue strongly pointed to an ulna fracture.

The drama began within 10 minutes of kick-off. Osimhen went down clutching his arm after a heavy collision and was surrounded by Liverpool players who suspected he was time-wasting. He had a confrontation with Dominik Szoboszlai before team-mate Mario Lemina stepped in to separate them. Osimhen returned to the pitch with a bandage on his right arm but was visibly struggling for the remainder of the half.

If surgery involving plates or screws is required, the recovery timeline follows a defined path. The first two weeks are dedicated to post-surgical immobilisation. A six to eight-week period of bone healing follows, with activity kept to a minimum. Rehabilitation and a gradual return to light training typically begin between weeks eight and twelve. A full return to competitive football can then be expected anywhere between twelve and twenty weeks from the date of the procedure; a worst-case absence of four to five months.

Galatasaray boss Okan Buruk admitted post-match that Osimhen's injury changed the course of the game: "It happened at the beginning; we tried to keep him on the pitch, but his pain increased, so we had to substitute him at halftime." Team-mate Noa Lang also suffered a serious injury on the night, sustaining a detached thumb after colliding with an advertising board; he is set to undergo surgery, leaving Galatasaray depleted in attack.

Osimhen had already been excluded from Nigeria's squad for the upcoming friendly tournament in Antalya, Turkey, even before the injury; but a lengthy absence now raises wider concerns for his availability across the critical final stretch of the Turkish Super Lig season. Galatasaray will now refocus their energy on the domestic campaign, where they remain in contention for a league and cup double.
