Oshoala Calls Malawi Defeat a Wake-Up Call Ahead of Crucial Zambia Clash

Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala has described Nigeria's disappointing 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening match of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations as a "wake-up call" for the defending champions.

Nigeria's title defence suffered an unexpected setback in Rabat as Malawi claimed a historic victory in their first-ever WAFCON appearance. The Scorchers stunned the 10-time African champions through an outstanding display led by sisters Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga. Temwa scored twice, while Tabitha added another to give Malawi a 3-1 advantage before Nigeria's late response.

The Super Falcons reduced the deficit through Rasheedat Ajibade's penalty before Uchenna Kanu struck deep into stoppage time. However, the late rally was not enough to prevent one of the biggest upsets in the tournament's history.

Reflecting on the defeat, Oshoala admitted that the gap between Africa's traditional powerhouses and emerging nations is narrowing.

"Smaller nations are closing the gap, but it's also a wake-up call for Nigeria. We have to understand that other teams want to win this trophy as well," Oshoala said.

The six-time African Women's Player of the Year remains confident that Nigeria can recover despite the poor start. She stressed that the group stage still offers opportunities to turn the campaign around if the team responds positively.

"It's still a long competition, and all we need to do is prepare well for the next game," she added.

Oshoala also appealed to Nigerian fans to continue supporting the team as they chase both another continental title and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, with places available through the latter stages of the tournament.

"We need the support of all Nigerians right now. A World Cup ticket is at stake, to be honest. This is the time we really need everyone to support the Super Falcons."

She also apologised to supporters following the disappointing result.

"We are sorry for losing the opening game to Malawi."

Nigeria now face a difficult Group C encounter against Zambia on Saturday. The Copper Queens head into the fixture full of confidence after thrashing Egypt 6-0 in their opening match, with captain Barbra Banda scoring four goals. Another defeat would leave the Super Falcons in danger of an early exit before they conclude the group stage against Egypt on August 5.
