Osaze Odemwingie Issues Stern Warning to Foreign-Born Talents Over Nigeria Eligibility

Posted : 04 May 2026

Former Nigeria international Osaze Odemwingie has voiced his frustration regarding the hesitation of foreign-born players to commit to the Super Eagles. Speaking in a recent interview, the 44-year-old emphasized that representing Nigeria should be a matter of pride rather than a result of persuasion. He suggested that the current trend of players treating the national team as a backup option is detrimental to the country's footballing identity.

Odemwingie specifically addressed the situations of players like Brentford’s Michael Kayode and Chelsea’s Tosin Adarabioyo. Kayode, a standout defender in the Premier League, currently represents Italy at the U-21 level and is reportedly waiting for a senior Azzurri call-up. Meanwhile, Adarabioyo has spent years delaying a definitive decision on his international future. Odemwingie argued that the "pampering" these players seem to expect from the Nigerian football authorities is unnecessary and misplaced.

The former West Bromwich Albion star compared the current era to his own career path. Born in Uzbekistan and having represented Russia at the youth level, Odemwingie made a swift choice to play for the Super Eagles. He went on to earn 65 caps and scored 11 goals, including a memorable winner against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2014 World Cup. He noted that while he respects mixed heritage, the connection to Nigeria should be the primary driving force for any player.

Odemwingie also touched upon the technical advantages these players could bring to the squad. He noted that players trained in European academies are often more "mechanical" and tactically disciplined from a young age. By integrating these refined skills with Nigeria’s natural physicality, he believes the Super Eagles could eventually contend for a World Cup title. However, he lamented that Nigeria’s best genes are currently serving other nations across the globe.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is expected to address some of these recruitment issues during the upcoming Unity Cup later this month. Chelle has indicated that he plans to introduce fresh faces into the squad, potentially including new dual-nationality recruits. Odemwingie remains hopeful that the tide will eventually turn, leading to a future where elite talents choose Nigeria first to bring glory back to the continent.
