Organisers Ramp Up Preparations for 2026 National Schools Football Championship

Posted : 09 April 2026

Organisers of the 2026 National Schools Football Championship have reported a significant surge in registrations as the competition moves into its final planning phase. The tournament is officially endorsed by the Nigeria Football Federation and the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools. It is designed to create a clear pathway for students to reach the U-15 and U-17 national teams.

The nationwide competition is scheduled to begin in May across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Schools will first compete at the state level before successful teams progress to the regional qualifiers. The winners from the six geopolitical zones will eventually meet in Abuja for the grand finale in June 2026.

Ibrahim Bello, the CEO of Kickstart Sports Foundation, described the tournament as a vital long-term investment for Nigerian football. He stated that the project focuses on structured development rather than just temporary talent discovery. According to Bello, the best performers will receive advanced training from elite coaches and gain direct exposure to international scouts.

A key feature of this year’s edition is the strict focus on credibility and the elimination of age fraud. Organisers will implement NIMC-integrated biometric verification to ensure all participants are genuine school-based athletes. This move aims to protect the integrity of the youth system and provide a fair playing field for both boys' and girls' categories.

The championship also includes a significant educational component for school staff. Physical Education teachers from the participating institutions will have the chance to undergo professional training. This initiative will allow them to earn certified football coaching licenses to improve the quality of sports instruction within schools.

National team coaches and representatives from various international academies are expected to be present throughout the tournament stages. This collaboration with the NFF ensures that standout players are identified early for the national developmental ranks. Organisers believe this structured approach will finally address the talent gap in Nigeria's grassroots football sector.
