Ordega, Plumptre face DR Congo star for POTM

Posted : 15 April 2025

Super Falcons stars Francisca Ordega and Ashleigh Plumptre have earned nominations for the Player of the Month award in the Saudi Women’s Premier League, marking the first time two Nigerian players have been shortlisted together within the same month.

The Al-Ittihad pair are vying for the March accolade alongside DR Congo’s Naomie Kabakaba, in what has become a closely watched three-way contest for the prestigious monthly honour.

Kabakaba, who transferred to Al-Ahli from Turkish side Galatasaray earlier this year, has quickly become a standout performer in Saudi Arabia’s top women’s division. The 27-year-old winger made an immediate impact, scoring five goals in just three games to help Al-Ahli secure two victories.

Despite Kabakaba's impressive goal tally, Ordega has also made her presence felt since joining Al-Ittihad from CSKA Moscow in January. In March alone, the veteran forward notched four goals and three assists, playing a role in seven of her team’s goals. She especially shined during Al-Ittihad’s dominant 9-0 win over Al Taraji on March 15, where she netted a hat-trick. She had earlier scored in a tight 2-1 loss to Al Nassr.

Ordega, who previously played for Atlético Madrid, has now scored five times in her first five matches for the Jeddah-based outfit, showcasing her enduring class and experience.

On the defensive end, Plumptre has also left a mark, contributing two goals and three assists during the same month. The versatile defender, now wearing the captain’s armband for Al-Ittihad, has adapted seamlessly since arriving from Leicester City and continues to lead by example on and off the pitch.

As voting continues, Ordega currently tops the fan poll with 40.9% support, closely followed by Plumptre at 38.5%, while Kabakaba sits third with 20.6%. Both Nigerian stars are expected to return to action this weekend as Al-Ittihad take on Al Shabab at the Prince Faisal bin Fahad Stadium in Jeddah.
