Onyinyechi Opara Named Best Goalkeeper of WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s goalkeeper Onyinyechi Opara has been named the Best Goalkeeper of the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup following her impressive performances for the Flamingos. The individual award was presented after Nigeria completed a perfect run to the title in Côte d’Ivoire.

Opara kept four clean sheets in the five matches she played during the competition. Her performances helped Nigeria maintain a strong defensive record throughout their title-winning campaign.

The goalkeeper was part of a Flamingos side that won all five of its matches. Nigeria finished at the top of the final standings with 15 points, ahead of Ghana on 12 points and Burkina Faso on nine.

The Flamingos completed their campaign with a 4-0 victory over Togo in the final on Sunday. Captain Harmony Chidi scored twice from the penalty spot, while Oluebube Umejiaku and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi also found the net.

Opara had already provided an indication of her importance during the opening match against Niger Republic. Nigeria won that game 5-0, with the goalkeeper helping the team begin its title defence with a clean sheet.

The goalkeeper’s award was one of two major individual honours claimed by Nigeria at the tournament. Teammate Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was named Best Player after scoring four goals and providing several assists during the competition.

Nigeria also finished the tournament with an impressive overall record. The Flamingos scored 17 goals and conceded only two across their five matches, completing the competition without dropping a point.

The WAFU-B success provides further momentum for the Flamingos ahead of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. Nigeria are drawn in Group B alongside North Korea, Poland and Puerto Rico, with their opening match against Poland scheduled for October 17.

Opara’s Golden Glove adds another individual achievement to Nigeria’s successful regional campaign. Her four clean sheets were a key part of the defensive record that helped the Flamingos secure the WAFU-B title.
