Federal Character Commission Chairman Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran has pledged her support for women’s football development in the Federal Capital Territory. She is also expected to attend the opening ceremony of the 2026 FCT FA Women’s Inter-Area Council Football Tournament on Friday.
Omidiran made the commitment during a meeting with HerGame Foundation President and FCT Football Association board member Dr Patience Adjuma Ayegba in Abuja. Ayegba visited the FCC chairman ahead of the grassroots tournament.
The competition is organised by the FCT Football Association and brings together women’s teams representing the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory. It is designed to provide a platform for identifying, developing and promoting female football talent at grassroots level.
Omidiran welcomed the visit and said she was pleased to meet Ayegba after looking forward to the opportunity. She described their shared interest in improving opportunities for young girls as a strong foundation for cooperation.
“I am very, very happy that she was able to make it to my office today,” Omidiran said. She added that both women are committed to the development of the girl child and confirmed her willingness to support the foundation.
The FCC chairman said she was particularly interested in initiatives that give young girls opportunities to develop their talents. She also believes sport can provide a pathway for young women to build meaningful careers and improve their lives.
Her decision to attend the tournament opening reflects growing attention to grassroots women’s football in the FCT. The Inter-Area Council competition provides an avenue for players from across the territory to gain competitive experience while attracting the attention of coaches and football administrators.
Ayegba’s HerGame Foundation has also been involved in initiatives focused on advancing opportunities for girls and women through sport. Her position on the FCT FA board further links grassroots football development with the association’s broader administrative structure.
The tournament will bring together players from the six Area Councils, creating a competitive setting for young female footballers from different parts of the FCT. Organisers are expected to use the event to identify players who could progress into higher levels of organised football.
Omidiran’s involvement adds institutional support to the initiative. Her presence at the opening ceremony is expected to further highlight the need for sustained investment in women’s football and talent development at the grassroots.
The FCT FA tournament therefore offers more than competition for the participating teams. It also provides a platform to promote female participation in football and create clearer development pathways for promising players across the Federal Capital Territory.
