Olympiakos Reject Bid for Super Eagles Defender Bruno Onyemaechi

Posted : 27 July 2026

Greek champions Olympiakos have rejected an offer for Super Eagles left-back Bruno Onyemaechi as the club moves to keep one of its key defenders ahead of the 2026/27 season. Club vice-president Kostas Karapapas confirmed that the proposal was received but quickly dismissed, underlining the Nigerian's importance to the squad.

Speaking to reporters during the club's pre-season tour in the Netherlands, Karapapas revealed that Olympiakos had received transfer offers for Francisco Ortega, André Luiz and Onyemaechi. However, he stressed that the bid for the Nigerian defender was rejected because the club highly values his abilities.

Karapapas described Onyemaechi as "a very good footballer" and indicated that Olympiakos have no intention of allowing him to leave before the new campaign begins. His comments reflect the confidence the club has in the defender after an impressive first full year in Greece.

The 26-year-old has featured prominently throughout Olympiakos' pre-season preparations, further suggesting he remains firmly in the plans of head coach José Luis Mendilibar. Onyemaechi started the club's final friendly against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar as Olympiakos fine-tuned preparations for their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round clash against NEC Nijmegen.

Since joining Olympiakos from Portuguese side Boavista in January 2025, Onyemaechi has established himself as a dependable option at left-back. He has made 39 appearances in all competitions, including five outings in the UEFA Champions League, while contributing consistently at both ends of the pitch.

Before his move to Greece, Onyemaechi built his career in Portugal with spells at Vila Real, Feirense and Boavista. His steady development earned him a place in the Super Eagles, where he has become one of Nigeria's regular options on the left side of defence.

The defender also impressed during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, further raising his profile across Europe. His performances for both club and country have attracted interest from other teams, but Olympiakos appear determined to retain his services.

Onyemaechi remains under contract with the Greek champions until June 2028, giving the club a strong position as they prepare for another domestic title challenge and a return to European competition. Rejecting the latest offer signals Olympiakos' determination to keep one of their most reliable defenders ahead of a demanding season.
