The National Sports Commission (NSC) has urged the Secretary Generals of various sports federations to adopt an innovative approach in carrying out their duties to achieve effective sports development goals.
The Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, issued this charge during a strategic meeting with the Secretaries of the National Sports Federations in Abuja.
"I must first of all say that, contrary to what was perceived before I, alongside Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, came on board, I am shocked, surprised, and very impressed with the professional qualities of all of you. You are some of the best sports minds we have in this country, and we are proud to have you," he said.
"But as we know, there is always room for improvement, and that is why I have called this meeting—to motivate you for the bigger challenges ahead."
"An innovative mindset is crucial for growth. Therefore, I challenge your brilliant minds to think inwardly and come up with concepts that will enhance your output and the quality of the federations."
"I am a pathological optimist, and I believe you can do more, be more creative, and be more dynamic by thinking outside the box. By now, you may have realized that I have an open-door policy, where every secretary is welcome to come into my office and discuss the way forward for his or her federation."
The DG also reemphasized the Commission’s Reset, Refocus, and Relaunch mandate to the secretaries, urging them to apply it in organizing their activities, particularly regarding the image of the country’s athletes at international competitions.
"The welfare of Nigerian athletes is of utmost importance to the Commission, which is why we established the Elite and Podium Board. We have already begun seeing their work in the area of grading our top athletes for different categories of training grants."
"It is therefore crucial for the various Secretary Generals to understand that the way we travel and dress our athletes for international competitions is also very important for high performance."
"All our top athletes in Category A of the Podium Board rankings will no longer fly anything less than business class for international competitions. No more jamboree traveling; we must scientifically approach the way we run our sports for high-performance results," the DG concluded.
