Aston Villa claimed a vital 1-0 away win over Lille in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie, with Ollie Watkins ending his goal drought. After a subdued start, Lille finished the first half strongly, with former Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud heading wide and Romain Perraud’s dipping effort saved by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 62nd minute when Watkins met a long ball flicked into the penalty area, calmly heading past Lille keeper Berke Özer for his first goal since late January. Villa maintained pressure, with Amadou Onana’s curling effort rattling the post and crossbar, and Watkins was denied a penalty after a challenge from Özer.
Villa managed the remainder of the match effectively, keeping their advantage intact and giving themselves a solid platform for the second leg at Villa Park on March 19. Boss Unai Emery, celebrating his 100th win in charge, praised his team’s organisation and defensive discipline, highlighting their focus on controlling possession and transitioning quickly in attack.
The opening exchanges had seen little action in the final third, though Villa created an early chance when Jadon Sancho played Morgan Rogers into the box, only for his cross to drift wide. Watkins almost converted a low pass from Onana, which was intercepted by Lille defender Aïssa Mandi, before Lille had a brief spell of attacking pressure.
Giroud’s header from a Tiago Santos cross and Perraud’s dipping shot were both comfortably dealt with by Martínez, while Rogers’ effort from the edge of the area went wide ahead of halftime.
Villa finally made the breakthrough after the hour, as Ezri Konsa launched a high ball forward which Emiliano Buendía nodded on into the path of Watkins, who calmly directed a header over Özer.
Onana then came close to doubling the lead, his curling strike narrowly missing the target, and Watkins raced clear in a counter-attack only to be denied a penalty.
The home side remained resilient, but Villa saw out the match, with captain John McGinn returning from injury to feature late and Buendía testing the Lille defence with a spectacular acrobatic effort.
Aston Villa now hold a slender advantage heading into the return leg, having combined defensive solidity with timely attacking moments to secure a crucial away goal in the Europa League tie.
