Ollie Watkins’ Aston Villa Future in Doubt Amid Al-Hilal Interest

Ollie Watkins’ absence from Aston Villa’s opening-day defeat at Brighton has intensified speculation over his future, with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal pursuing the striker.

Villa have reportedly rejected several approaches for the 30-year-old, while Watkins is understood to be open to a move to Saudi Arabia. Manager Unai Emery’s refusal to explain the striker’s omission, saying the player should address the matter himself, has added further uncertainty to an already tense situation.

The timing could hardly be worse for Villa. Without a recognised striker, Emery’s side suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at Brighton in their first Premier League game of the campaign, conceding four goals before half-time before João Gomes was sent off.

Watkins has become one of the defining figures of Villa’s recent rise. Since arriving from Brentford, he has established himself as the club’s leading Premier League goalscorer and has played a major role in their success under Emery.

However, his relationship with the club now appears increasingly strained. Watkins has been training separately after returning from an extended break, while reports indicate that he has made his desire to explore the Al-Hilal opportunity known.

Al-Hilal have continued to push for the England international, but an agreement with Villa remains necessary. Recent reports suggest the Saudi club has made progress on personal terms, leaving the transfer fee as a key obstacle in negotiations.

Villa must also consider how they would replace a striker who has scored more than 100 goals for the club. Tammy Abraham remains at Villa Park, while Brian Madjo provides another option, although Emery would be reluctant to place the full attacking burden on a 17-year-old. Nicolas Jackson has also been linked with a move to Villa.

The uncertainty surrounding Watkins comes during a turbulent transfer window for Villa, who have already lost several important members of the squad. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez's future is also unresolved, increasing the pressure on Emery and the club's recruitment team.

With the transfer deadline approaching, Villa face a difficult decision: hold firm on their valuation and keep a player whose relationship with the club is becoming increasingly complicated, or accept a major offer and attempt to rebuild their attack at short notice.
