For many parents, seeing their teenager glued to a video game console raises concern about a lack of physical activity, but that’s never been a worry for Oliver Provstgaard’s family. The Lazio defender and Denmark U-21 captain is not only building a promising football career but also has a history as a serious esports competitor.
Provstgaard famously won the FIFA Champions League four years ago at the age of 17, defeating a top Italian contender and earning $75,000 in the process—all while still recovering from a torn knee ligament during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Now 1.94 meters tall and commanding the pitch in both Serie A and European youth football, Provstgaard has left the esports stage behind to focus entirely on real-world football. After being acquired by Lazio for €4 million, he’s preparing for his first full season in Italy’s top flight.
His commitment to the sport has seen him rise through the ranks quickly, and he recently helped Denmark secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the Euro U-21 tournament after a 2-2 draw against Finland. Despite being rested in that match, his influence on the squad is unquestioned.
Esports remains a growing industry, but for Provstgaard, it was only ever a phase during injury recovery. During the pandemic lockdown, his daily hours of FIFA led to expert-level play, and with encouragement from the esports world, he entered and won the biggest competition of his gaming life.
Yet after that triumph, he made the decision to walk away from professional gaming and concentrate solely on football. He hasn’t competed in any gaming tournament since, even though many believed he had the potential to become one of the all-time greats in FIFA esports.
Still, the transition to elite sport hasn’t been without its reminders of reality. In Denmark’s 2-1 win over the Netherlands earlier in the tournament, Provstgaard accidentally scored an own goal—the kind of error you can’t undo with a reset button.
But even moments like that underline the unique journey he’s taken: from digital dominance to physical excellence. And now, all eyes are on the young defender as he continues to grow into a central figure for club and country.
