Nasarawa Amazons underlined their dominance in the Governor Douye Diri Women’s Pre-Season Tournament after Okoraofor Deborah’s second-half strike secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Delta Queens in the final in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The Lafia-based side successfully defended the trophy they won in the inaugural 2025 edition, demonstrating tactical discipline, attacking quality, and defensive resilience to emerge champions for the second consecutive year.

After a tightly contested first half in which both teams struggled to find a breakthrough, Okoraofor produced the decisive moment in the 57th minute with an impressive individual effort.

The forward collected the ball on the wing, drove confidently into the penalty area, and finished with precision, sending a well-directed shot beyond the Delta Queens goalkeeper and into the far corner.

Her goal rewarded the Amazons’ persistent attacking efforts and gave the defending champions the advantage they needed to take control of the final.

Delta Queens responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser, but the Amazons remained organised at the back, limiting their opponents’ opportunities and protecting their slender lead until the final whistle.

Goalkeeper Okoye Chioma played an important role in preserving the advantage, displaying composure between the posts as Delta Queens intensified their search for a late goal.

Okoye’s contribution added to her impressive tournament history. She was instrumental in Nasarawa Amazons’ maiden triumph in 2025, saving two penalties during the decisive shootout before helping the team retain the title a year later.

The victory capped an encouraging campaign for the Amazons, whose collective performance reflected their determination to maintain their position among the leading sides in Nigerian women’s football.

Isaiah Ochanya was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player in recognition of her impressive contribution to the competition.

Head coach Olaoye expressed delight at the achievement, describing himself as overjoyed that his players had successfully repeated their previous triumph.

For Nasarawa Amazons, the title defence represents more than another addition to their trophy cabinet. It provides a timely confidence boost as the team intensifies preparations for the forthcoming Nigeria Women’s Football League season.

While Delta Queens were left disappointed after narrowly missing out on the trophy, the Amazons celebrated another successful outing in Yenagoa, with Okoraofor’s decisive finish ensuring that the Lafia Landladies remained champions.
