Okocha Receives Retro FIFA World Cup Award For Historic Performance Against Spain

Posted : 12 June 2026

Nigerian football legend Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has received a retroactive FIFA World Cup Superior Player of the Match award. The special accolade recognizes his breathtaking performance in Nigeria's famous group stage victory over Spain during the 1998 World Cup in France. The 52-year-old former midfield maestro unveiled the silver trophy from a custom case in a social media broadcast.

The award is part of a unique collaborative campaign by Michelob ULTRA and football media platform Copa90. The organizers reviewed extensive archival footage to honour standout individual performances from tournaments held before the official Player of the Match award debuted in 2002. Okocha expressed deep gratitude to the organizers and noted his immense pride at receiving the recognition.

On June 13, 1998, at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, Okocha ran the show as the Super Eagles shocked a star-studded Spanish side 3-2 in their Group D opener. Although the midfielder did not score a goal himself, his world-class dribbling, exceptional creativity, and leadership continuously tore the Spanish defense apart. His masterclass on the pitch neutralised a fierce team that featured icons like Fernando Hierro and Raúl.

The African giants fought back brilliantly from behind to secure all three points in that historic encounter. Nigeria found the back of the net through a fine strike from Mutiu Adepoju, a Garba Lawal effort, and a famous long-range rocket from Sunday Oliseh. The massive upset helped propel the Super Eagles to the top of Group D, ahead of Spain, Paraguay, and Bulgaria.

This latest recognition further cements Okocha's enduring legacy as one of the most naturally gifted and entertaining footballers in African history. The award celebrates a golden era in Nigerian football just as the global audience gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
