Ogunbote Cautions Plateau United Against Slump After Dominant Win Over Ikorodu City

Posted : 09 April 2026

Plateau United head coach Gbenga Ogunbote has warned his squad that their survival mission is not yet complete. Despite a convincing 4-1 victory over Ikorodu City FC on Monday, the veteran manager insists that the team must maintain their focus. The win, which took place at the Lafia City Stadium, saw the "Peace Boys" secure three vital points in their bid to avoid the drop.

The encounter remained deadlocked after a cautious first half where both sides struggled to find a breakthrough. However, the game exploded into life during the second period as Plateau United found their clinical edge. Striker Ossy Martins was the star of the show, netting twice to help his side build a comfortable three-goal lead. Ikorodu City managed a consolation goal, but they were largely outclassed in the final 45 minutes.

Following the result, Plateau United moved up to eighth position on the league table with 46 points. Ogunbote noted that a negative result would have seen the club tumble down to 14th or 15th place. He emphasized that the definition of a "good game" must always include both aesthetic play and final success. The coach stressed that the team is still mathematically within reach of the relegation zone if they falter.

The match was relocated to Lafia due to security concerns in Jos following recent tragic events in the region. Ogunbote admitted that while the team missed the presence of their home supporters, the change of scenery helped the players focus on the task at hand. He praised the local support in Lafia but expressed hope that the club can soon return to their traditional home ground in Jos.

Ogunbote took charge of Plateau United in January when the club sat in a precarious 19th position. Under his guidance, the team has undergone a remarkable transformation from relegation favorites to mid-table competitors. With only five games remaining in the season, the Jos-based side is now within striking distance of a continental qualification spot.

The manager’s vast experience with clubs like Enyimba and Shooting Stars has been credited for the tactical discipline shown in recent weeks. He urged his players to finish the season on a high note and ensure they secure their top-flight status as early as possible. The victory over Ikorodu City serves as a major boost to their momentum as the NPFL season reaches its climax.
