Ogun Set for CAF D Coaching Course as Eguavoen Backs Certification Drive

Posted : 15 October 2026

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen has praised the Ogun State Football Association (Ogun FA) for prioritising grassroots coaching development and professional certification. His commendation comes ahead of a CAF D Coaching Course scheduled to hold in Ogun State from October 21 to 26, 2026.

Eguavoen spoke on Monday while receiving a delegation from the Ogun FA and the Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association (NFCA) in Ijebu-Ode. He commended Ogun FA chairman Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi for creating opportunities for coaches to improve their knowledge and professional qualifications.

The former Super Eagles defender said structured training and recognised certification were essential to the sustainable development of Nigerian football. He noted that while the country had produced many accomplished coaches, the demands of modern football required continuous learning and specialised knowledge.

“We have had many good coaches over the years, and we still have a lot of good coaches today. There is no doubt about that. However, CAF is taking coaching to another level because the demands of the profession have evolved, and there are now several aspects of coaching that require specialised knowledge and training,” Eguavoen said.

The NFF technical director explained that coaching certification provides a structured pathway for aspiring and practising coaches. It also helps them develop their technical competencies and progress through the different levels of the profession.

He stressed that experience and passion alone were not enough to meet modern coaching standards. Coaches must also acquire the technical knowledge and professional qualifications needed to work effectively in today's game.

Eguavoen urged grassroots coaches to take advantage of the forthcoming course. He described coaching education as an important foundation for those seeking to build sustainable careers in football and improve the quality of player development.

He also reaffirmed the NFF's commitment to initiatives that strengthen coaching capacity across Nigeria. According to him, grassroots development remains an important part of building a stronger national football system.

The six-day course is being organised by the Ogun FA in collaboration with the NFCA under the leadership of Coach Victor Agbagu. The programme is expected to provide participating coaches with opportunities to improve their technical knowledge and coaching methods.

Majekodunmi reiterated his administration's commitment to supporting grassroots coaches through education and professional development. He assured Eguavoen that the association was prepared to host the programme and expressed confidence that it would help participants improve their coaching abilities.

The initiative forms part of Ogun FA's broader efforts to strengthen grassroots football and develop qualified coaches capable of identifying and nurturing young talents across the state. The programme also reflects the growing importance of formal coaching education in preparing Nigerian football personnel for the evolving demands of the game.
