Norway came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Morocco in an international friendly on Sunday, with captain Martin Odegaard scoring the equaliser in a competitive World Cup warm-up match in Harrison, New Jersey.
The North Africans made the brighter start and took the lead inside the opening 10 minutes. Brahim Diaz finished calmly after being picked out by a dangerous attack down the left flank, giving Morocco an early advantage.
Morocco, who made history by becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2022, looked sharp throughout much of the contest. The Atlas Lions controlled large spells of the first half and created the better opportunities, with Abde Ezzalzouli coming close to doubling the lead before the interval.
Norway struggled to generate clear-cut chances despite the presence of Erling Haaland in attack. Their best opening of the first half fell to Alexander Sorloth, whose header drifted narrowly wide. Shortly before the break, Antonio Nusa tested Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who produced a fine save to preserve his side’s lead.
Morocco continued to threaten after halftime and nearly added a second goal when Diaz forced a save from Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland. The rebound fell kindly, but the follow-up effort failed to find the target.
As the game entered its final stages, Norway found a way back into the contest. With 15 minutes remaining, Odegaard arrived to meet a low cross from Oscar Bobb and fired home confidently to level the score.
The draw provided both teams with valuable preparation ahead of the World Cup. Morocco will begin their Group C campaign against Brazil before facing Scotland and Haiti, while Norway are set to open their tournament against Iraq before taking on Senegal and France.
