2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 29: Obioma's Brace Sinks Shooting Stars

Posted : 09 March 2026

Two strikes by former NPFL hotshot, Obioma Chukwuemeka, secured the maximum points for Abia Warriors, who overpowered Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan 2-0 in the 2025/2026 Match Day 29 fixture of the Nigeria Premier Football League, held at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.

It was a commanding display from the Umuahia Warlords as they cruised past the Oluyole Warriors to keep their continental aspirations alive. Imama Amapakabo, the Warriors' gaffer, made four changes to the squad that started their last league game in Maiduguri against El-Kanemi Warriors, with Jibrin Faiz, Osahon Nelson, Idris Alonge, and Chindi Merpring making way for Israel Joseph, Casmir Azubuike, Paul Samson, and Chukwuemeka Obioma, respectively.

The Warriors made their intentions known from the first whistle as they could have gone in front within two minutes, but former Abia Warriors goalkeeper Godgift El-Kanah pulled off a brilliant save, parrying Obioma's header from eight yards for a corner kick. After 14 minutes of play, he made another breathtaking save to deny Obioma again, but five minutes later, the talisman struck. Following sustained possession, the ball reached Suraj Lawal, who squared it for Obioma to tap home the opener.

The hosts mesmerized spectators with enterprising play, creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities, but failed to extend their lead in the first half. Abia Warriors started the second half as they ended the first, doubling their advantage in the 54th minute as Obioma, the 2023 league top marksman, completed his brace with another clinical finish. A defence-splitting pass from Casmir Azubuike allowed Obioma to slot the ball past the helpless goalkeeper.

Shooting Stars made wholesale changes to salvage the game, but Abia Warriors’ bench responded with substitutions of their own at two intervals, with Fatai Abdullahi and Idris Alonge replacing Valentine Ugwu and Suraj Lawal in the 72nd minute, followed by Chindi Merpring and Chinonso Uzoma coming on for Obioma and Azubuike with five minutes remaining.

Up next for Abia Warriors, who have moved to fourth position on the table, is a trip to Kano to face Barau FC at the Sani Abacha Stadium.
