NYL Super 8: Ondo State Reaffirms Football Commitment After Fifth-Place Finish

Posted : 01 July 2025

The Director of Sunshine Stars Youth Team, Oladimeji Abimbola, has reaffirmed Ondo State’s commitment to football development following the team’s promising fifth-place finish at the National Youth League (NYL) Super 8.

Speaking after the tournament, Abimbola hailed the progress of the Sunshine Stars U-19 team, describing their campaign as a significant milestone in the evolution of the 10-month-old side.

“Despite being a new outfit, the team has already achieved significant milestones,” Abimbola said. “This is just the beginning of our long-term strategy to build a strong football future for Ondo State.”

Abimbola emphasized the team’s role in serving as a talent pipeline for the senior team. He noted that four standout players, Ariyo Ikulanberu, Samuel Matthew, Richard Christopher, and Shaibu Yakubu, were officially promoted to the Sunshine Stars senior squad towards the end of last season.

He also revealed that over 10 additional players from the youth setup have been invited for pre-season trials with the senior team, demonstrating the U-19 side’s impact and potential.

“One of our standout players is set to travel to Turkey next week for trials with Munasik Football Club, a promising side in European football,” he added.

Furthermore, three players are currently undergoing intensive training at the Aspire Academy in Lagos, a highly respected development institution known for facilitating international opportunities for young Nigerian talents.

Abimbola expressed gratitude to the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and the Sunshine Stars FC management for their unwavering support and long-term vision, which continue to shape a thriving environment for youth football.

“We’re not just building a team, we’re building a football culture in Ondo. The results from the NYL Super 8 show that we’re on the right path.”

The Sunshine Stars U-19 team’s strong showing in the NYL Super 8 not only signals the beginning of a new era for youth football in the state but also underscores Ondo’s growing reputation as a breeding ground for top football talent in Nigeria.
