The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has confirmed the group stage draw for the 2026 NWFL Championship, with 16 clubs set to compete for promotion to the country's top-flight women's league.
The championship tournament will take place in Calabar and will feature four groups of four teams each. At the end of the competition, only two clubs will secure promotion to the 2026/27 NWFL Premiership, making every match crucial in the race for top-flight football.
Group A features Delta Babes, DreamStar Ladies FC, Rosaria Victrix FC and First Mahi Babes. The group is expected to be highly competitive, with each side aiming to make a strong start in pursuit of a place in the knockout rounds.
Group B consists of former Premiership side Pelican Stars, Gallant Queens, Ikukuoma Queens and Moje Queens. Pelican Stars will be among the favourites to challenge for promotion, having previously competed at the highest level of women's football in Nigeria.
Group C includes Rangers Women FC, Fortress Ladies FC, Wazbak International Academy and Unification FC. Rangers Women will hope to build on their growing reputation, while the other clubs will be eager to cause surprises in what promises to be an evenly matched group.
Group D is made up of Imo Striker Queens, Kwara Ladies, Chosen Generation Angels FC and Ghetto Tigers. The teams will battle for valuable points as they seek a place in the latter stages of the competition and move closer to earning promotion.
The NWFL Championship serves as the second tier of women's football in Nigeria and provides ambitious clubs with an opportunity to reach the elite Premiership. The annual competition has become an important platform for developing players, coaches and clubs while strengthening the country's women's football structure.
With only two promotion tickets available, every fixture in Calabar is expected to carry significant importance. Clubs will need consistency, defensive discipline and attacking quality to progress through the tournament and achieve their goal of joining the NWFL Premiership next season.
Football followers across the country will be watching closely as the competition gets underway, with several emerging talents expected to showcase their abilities during the promotion race.
